What is it like to attend rehab?

Making the decision to turn yourself over to a drug or alcohol rehab center will be one that you will never regret. It’s never too early or too late to go to rehab for your addiction. Rehab will help you detox from the substance or substances you are on while giving you the tools you need to stay clean once you are back to your everyday life. Of course, attending rehab is a big deal for many patients. It can be unnerving when you aren’t sure what to expect from rehab. If you have never been to rehab before, you are likely wondering what it will be like. Read on to learn more about it.

The different types of rehabs

When you decide to attend rehab, you’ll have a few different choices when it comes to the facility you choose. There are three main types of facilities you can choose from-inpatient, outpatient, and residential.

Inpatient- Inpatient rehab is the best choice if you have a severe addiction and need hospitalization while going through detox. This type of rehab is set in a hospital or hospital-like setting. You will be in the facility day and night, closely monitored by doctors and nurses.

Outpatient- Outpatient rehab works around your schedule if you cannot take the time to attend overnight rehab. You’ll drive to and from a facility for therapy sessions and group meetings, and you will have the ability to choose the days and times you attend.

Residential- Residential rehab offers different programs and usually includes in-house detox services. You’ll stay day and night and will attend therapy sessions daily. The center may also offer holistic therapy treatments and volunteer options.

What are therapy sessions like?

Therapy is a huge part of rehab no matter where you go. You’ll be a part of the following therapy sessions:

• Individual, or private therapy
• Group therapy
• Family therapy

Individual therapy sessions are your chance to speak to a counselor on a face-to-face basis about your addiction. If you have a dual diagnosis, you’ll also have the opportunity to speak about your mental health issues at this point. Most rehabs offer private therapy once a day or a few times a week, depending on the center. You’ll undergo extensive behavioral therapy sessions to help you get to the root of your addiction and learn how to function without drugs and alcohol.

Group therapy sessions are a major part of rehab. These sessions help addicts develop important socialization and communication skills while teaching them how to express their different issues. It’s a great way for addicts to learn self-awareness by talking to others who have similar problems.

Family therapy sessions are typically offered after an addict has been in rehab for at least a couple of weeks. Therapy will help families pinpoint their specific challenges and problems and learn improved ways to interact with one another. Family therapy is an extremely important type of therapy that is necessary for all family units but especially those with children involved.

What is a day in rehab like?

While every rehab operates in its own, unique way, you can expect a certain schedule once you arrive. The following is a typical schedule for rehab:

Breakfast- While you don’t have to get up before sunrise, you will be expected to get up early enough to enjoy a healthy breakfast. You may also have the opportunity to attend various holistic activities before or after breakfast, such as yoga or meditation.

Mid-morning activities- You may have therapy sessions before lunchtime, or you might have time to yourself to meditate, exercise, read, write, or engage in other relaxing activities.

Afternoon activities- In most rehabs, you will have group and private therapy sessions during the afternoon. If the rehab has holistic activities available, you may be permitted to participate in them.

Evening- After dinner, you will likely have some downtime for yourself. Some facilities also offer chances for volunteer activities that will help you fill the time.

What to expect after rehab

When your program is over, you may decide to move into a sober living home for a few weeks to a few months. If you do, the facility will help set you up with a bed in a local facility. You’ll also want to make sure you are ready to keep attending 12-step meetings when you are on your own.
